Daniel Paul works primarily with the human figure, constructing physically convincing situations that are easy to recognise but harder to understand.
Realism provides a familiar point of entry, but not a fixed reading.
Meaning may emerge from the figure itself, or from its relationships with objects, materials, cultural references, other figures or its surroundings. A gesture may suggest care and control at the same time; beauty may become uncomfortable, dignity absurd, attraction uncertain.
Rather than illustrating fixed conclusions, Paul leaves room for an initial reading to remain valid, change or coexist with others.
